Getting in to Hospitality
Is the hospitality industry still a positive career path for the young?
Recent times has taken its toll on the hospitality and catering industry. The pandemic, Brexit and the war in the Ukraine have all led to rising prices and insecurity which has left young people opting not to take this path when planning their career.
But what if you are one of those that want to show off your creative flair? Perhaps you have always wanted to be a wizard in the kitchen or have the innovation and passion to deliver show stopping events? How should you approach those first steps?
There are various ways to start. Either at college or perhaps even an apprenticeship.
If you want to take the college route, make sure you fully understand what the course really entails. Ask questions of the college and make sure the content is relevant to your long-term plans. Understand what your commitments are and that you can give this commitment. Discuss what you want to get out of the course, any concerns you might have and what opportunity there is for practical experience within this course.
Alternatively, you might consider an apprenticeship or hybrid route that will give you a combination of practical and theory training.
There are many schemes to choose from and again you should make sure that whichever you decide to take, covers what you want.
If an apprenticeship, ask what structure is in place for on-the-job training. This might be day release, if so, what qualification is obtainable at the end of the course. What is the typical working hour expectation? What would your typical day look like? Will this experience help deliver your final qualification?
Then choose an employer that demonstrates their alignment with your goals. Make sure the structure is in place and that they and you are a good cultural fit.
