Sustainable Weddings
How to plan your wedding whilst considering a sustainable approach.
Every bride has a very personal idea of what their perfect day will look like. The event will reflect who the happy couple are and what is important to them.
There is no specific season for weddings now, with many couples choosing autumn and winter as well as the traditional spring and summer. Therefore, seasonality makes for a varied occasion both in the dishes they choose for the wedding feast itself as well as for the decor and theming.
We all place more emphasis in our day to day making sure we are sustainable in our purchasing and choices, so of course this will follow when making plans for the big day and be reflected in the decisions taken.
Here are some steps that will help you deliver a fantastic celebration whilst considering the planet.
Firstly, decide what you want the day to look like. What’s important to you as a couple? Is it the venue, food, styling or entertainment? Once the list is agreed you can take the next steps in creating your sustainable special day.
Most venues ensure they are doing their bit to be energy conscious. This might be in simple ways like lighting, waste disposal or heating so you may decide to ask relevant questions on your first visit. Entertainers may find it more difficult but still will let you know what they are doing. The biggest area to support your aspirations will be in your catering and styling choices.
There are many catering companies out there, more now are either working towards or already have the B Corp accreditation. This is an automatic tick. You know this supplier has worked hard to demonstrate their commitment not only to the planet but the community and their team.
When enquiring you will see the logo on their website, but still ask as some may be in the final stages of accreditation. The process is a long journey and takes time
Food is a simple way to reflect your aspirations. By choosing seasonal ingredients and experimenting with more unusual choices, (venison is one such choice, very sustainable but also delicious and has the illusion of luxury). Your caterer can help you here.
Styling is the final piece. You want to make a statement and create a backdrop. How can you do this efficiently?
Flowers are beautiful but once cut, have such a short shelf life. Consider reducing your use. Table decor is an easy way to avoid use of freshly cut stems. Try instead candles, foliage, table lighting or seasonal foraging. Pine cones, evergreen etc.
One caterer has made this even more simply for happy couples. Dinner Ladies the London based caterer has their own in-house styling team and so can combine an approach over both decor, styling and catering to make sure you achieve your target but also you can be confident that you are in safe hands and will enjoy that perfect day with a clear conscience.
